Because I had left my passport at home, I was not able to cross the footbridge to view the falls from the Canadian side. I had learned my lesson on a previous trip to Niagara Falls, USA. For some reason, I did not recall reading that my passport would be required because this itinerary did not port in Canada.įortunately, I had my passport with me. The agent at the final check-in desk asked for my passport. Next up was a reservation verification and temperature check. When my number flashed on the screen, I reported to a table outside where yet another agent placed a pink bracelet around my wrist to indicate my test was negative. The first waiting room was outfitted with two huge displays that continuously updated. An agent verified my pre-registration for the antigen test, assigned me a number, and pointed me in the direction of a private booth for the nose swab. There were several stages in the check-in process, and the first was providing proof of vaccination. This was a vax-required sailing, and guests had to pass a rapid antigen test prior to boarding. I dropped off my rolling suitcase for delivery to my stateroom, but there was one more hurdle I had to cross before I would be allowed on board. The massive floating hotel would be home base for my weeklong Alaska adventure, and I was exhilarated beyond belief. In broad daylight, the NCL Encore was even more majestic. I retrieved my backpack and rolling carry-on and set off on the half-mile walk to the pier.ĭay 1: Seattle, Washington (Embarkation & Sail Away) My scheduled check-in at Pier 66 was between 9:30 and 10:00 AM, so after grabbing breakfast and a few last minute photos at the market, I returned to my hotel. I watched transfixed as the illuminated ocean liner sailed silently into the foggy harbor. My internal clock was still on Florida time, so I awoke early on the day of departure and headed toward Pike Place Market to enjoy a coffee from the original Starbucks.Īs fate would have it, I arrived at the waterfront just as the Encore was returning to the Port of Seattle from the previous week’s itinerary. As it turned out, everything went smoothly as planned. The Encore’s departure time was 5:00 PM, but I flew into Seattle one day early to minimize stress in case of a flight delay and also to allow myself time to explore a bit of the Emerald City on foot. This daily travelogue of my October sailing focuses primarily on itinerary destinations, shore activities, and life onboard. Although my experiences in Alaska paralleled those of my fellow passengers, no one’s experience was exactly the same. When planning your cruise, be sure to carefully compare available itineraries in order to book the one that suits you best. Variations of my itinerary depicted above also include Victoria, Skagway, Dawes Glacier, Hubbard Glacier, Seward, and other ports. NCL’s Alaska itineraries differ slightly from cruise to cruise. Then, a few months ago my friends Cheryl and Lisa who run What Boundaries Travel shared their NCL Encore itinerary on Facebook, and suddenly Alaska was back in my face.Ī few weeks later, I booked a cruise of my own.

It’s possible, especially given that Dickens’s friend William Harrison Ainsworth was writing a novel about Jack Sheppard at the same time that Dickens was working on Oliver Twist. Some critics think that the Artful Dodger is based on the historical robber and prison-breaker, Jack Sheppard. He also is one of the main "canters" of the novel-he speaks almost entirely in thieves’ cant, which gives Dickens a chance to show off what he knows, and gives the reader the titillating impression that he or she is glimpsing some authentic view of the criminal underworld. He talks and walks like a man, and the contrast between his attitude and his size is pretty funny. Fagin / f e n / is a fictional character and the secondary antagonist in Charles Dickenss 1838 novel Oliver Twist. In the preface to the novel, he is described as a 'receiver of stolen goods'. He can’t be more than twelve, but he acts like a full-grown man, and even wears men’s clothes (with the sleeves rolled way up: suave). And my names Jack Dawkins - better known among me more hintimate friends as the Artful Dodger. He provides comic relief in part because of his anti-establishment, devil-may-care attitude, but also because of the odd juxtapositions of opposites that he provides. He faced starvation and injustice from the government, until one day he decided to go for London, in search for better life. Oliver suspects that Dawkins may not be an altogether admirable sort but. and it's not because he has the coolest street name in all of London. Disheveled Tailor Königliche from Hungary - This is a new to me grape, I don't think I've ever even heard of Konigliche before, which is indigenous to Hungary. This is starting much better than last year! This is actually a pretty nice, dry example. Birds on a Wire Red Blend from Portugal - we love Portuguese red blends and the value they deliver.Moon Meadow Chardonnay from Italy - also not bad! Perhaps a tad flabby, but this has nice fruit and touches of baking spice with a fairly long, juicy finish.Soft, simple and easy to drink, this is about what you'd expect for the equivalent of an $8 bottle of wine. Right Hook Cabernet Sauvignon from the Thracian Lowlands in Bulgaria - with expectations set pretty low after last year's debacle, this isn't too bad at all. Here's the full listing of what's in this year's box along with our tasting notes on each: If, on the other hand, you look at this as more of a fun exploration of varieties and regions you wouldn't typically consume, then this has the potential to be lots of fun even if many of the wines are just not that great (or even downright bad). You will undoubtedly be disappointed by what you find. If you're expecting every wine to be great, the Costco Wine Advent Calendar is not for you (witness last year's version - see below for more on that). One other note (written before we've tried this year's wines) as we've gotten this question a few times. The regions even include off the beaten path places like Hungary, North Macedonia, Georgia, Moldova and Luxembourg in addition to the tried true like Italy, Spain, Portugal and France. That includes varieties like Macabeo, Fernao Pires, Saperavi and Rivaner. Of course, what really matters here is the wine and in addition to the usual suspects like Cab, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc they've also included some really unique and interesting varieties and regions that have the potential to truly make this an adventure. They definitely did a nice job with little cut-outs for each day so if you want to be surprised you certainly can be. Understanding what is not allowed in the park is one of Aquatica's most important tips. However, the park does offer free life jackets for guests. Life jackets must also be approved and tagged by Aquatica Orlando staff for use. If you wish to bring a personal life jacket, it must be in good condition and clearly marked with a USCG - Type II or Type III approval. Remember, arriving early will also help you claim the best parking spots! Find out what you can bring to AquaticaĪ family trip to the water park wouldn't be complete without the essentials.Ĭheck out our checklist below of what you can't miss: When visiting Aquatica Orlando, always make sure you have extra money for parking, just like other Orlando theme parks. Seaworld Aquatica – Entrance Money for Parking The three restaurants at the park offer food that is slightly above typical water park fare.īanana Beach Cookout, an all-inclusive buffet, offers an intriguing deal. Hard to say, but maybe Volcano Bay is a little more intense in the sense of adrenaline-fueled attractions. While it's not as lush as Disney's Typhoon Lagoon (or SeaWorld's Discovery Cove), it's very pleasant.Īmong the more extreme waterslides are Ihu's Breakaway Falls, a multi-drop tower that includes launch pods, and Ray Rush, a family raft that incorporates a mini-vase and a halfpipe element.Īmong all the water parks at Orlando's top three theme park resorts, SeaWorld, Universal and Disney World, which one offers the most excitement? Some of the best and most popular water parks can be found in Florida, and Parque Aquatica is among them. It's well signposted, so rest assured that your GPS will guide you right to the right place. Parking costs $30 and like the park, it is very close to Sea World. We recommend that you check the calendar and Park hours on the official website.Īttention because the park usually closes on some Mondays and Tuesdays in November and December! Park Parking Normally the park is open from 10 am to 5 pm, but it is possible that in some months the hours are changed, such as in summer, for example. The theme behind Aquatica is the pacific ocean, especially the beaches of Australia and New Zealand.Īt the Aquatica you will find a large number of water slides and two wave pools that sit side by side on an artificial white sand beach.Īnd other things very similar to what we find in other water parks in orlando like lounge chairs scattered around the park for a nice rest. Want to see the dolphin but don't want to be in any of these attractions? No problem, it is also possible to see dolphins from land. Passengers aboard the two rides of the two Tasssie Twister bowl attraction also flow into the lazy river and can see the animals. The relatively short route also passes through a grotto with an aquarium of colorful African fish. Strolling next door and onto Loggerhead Lane, Aquatica's lazy river, there's no waiting, and the attraction pleasantly includes a leisurely stroll through an underwater window to the dolphin pool. With lines that easily increase to an hour or more on busy days, think carefully before taking a tour of this attraction so you don't get too frustrated.īut that doesn't mean you won't see cute dolphins. When you enter the pool with the dolphins, the tubes change to clear acrylic.īut even if the dolphins are swimming close to the tubes (which is only occasionally) you are unlikely to see them as both the dolphins and you will be at a high speed. While the concept of “interacting with dolphins” sounds intriguing, the experience may not be worth the wait.ĭolphin Plunge's waterslides start from enclosed opaque tubes and offer fast, twisting rides in the dark. Therefore, water parks are excellent alternatives for those who want to cool off a little on these hotter days. On our last winter trip, we had days of extreme heat, when walking in the park in the sun becomes extremely uncomfortable. Orlando is a very tropical place and has warm days at all times of the year. So it's not surprising that he created a water park of the highest standard.

There was a time you could tweak Chrome with more radical ways. Google is pro in dev stuff, so that’s why Chrome and Canary are still my browser of choice when it comes to work or developing stuff. Developer-friendlyĬhrome’s Developer Tools are by far the best for web developers, hands down. One of the features that have kept me using Chrome for many years. Not everyone likes this, but I like the top 8 pages that show up when I open the new tab page. Some extensions are quite bad, outdated and unnecessary though and it takes time to find the good ones. Great mount of extensionsīeing the most popular choice, there are a lot of extensions. I just need to type first or two first letters and I can instantly go to the site I was just browsing on different device. What I loved about Google is that I can use the browser on my Mac and same visiting history shows up in my mobile phone. Syncs across operating systems and devices For Google Chrome users it means that data syncs between browser and Google account, search is optimized for you and so on. “Everyting Google” is a good and a bad thing. The most popular browser in 2017, need I say more. Let’s start about Chrome which is the the most popular browser today. This article is mainly written on OS X user perspective, hence Safari is included. Used it many days, but then made an even more radical switch to Safari. I had already been using Firefox Developers Edition as my dev browser, so decided to give it a go as my main browser. As geeky app-o-holic, it was time for me to rethink my browser choices as well, so I downloaded cleverly branded new Firefox Quantum on my MacBook Pro. The small size application, only occupies 6,1Mb, is free.Mozilla published the new Firefox on 14th of November and Twitter exploded. In any case, the work done by the team of daniel alm in publicizing a valuable function for those who spend hours in front of Safari. We missing that the favicons are not activated when Safari is in second flat, or that they drag simultaneously when we move a Safari window to one end. Thanks to user input, these errors should disappear or be minimized. In the previous version, at specific moments the application uses favicons with some kind of error. It is appreciated that the developers optimize the applications from the first versions. Other improvements that we find in this version, is the improvement in resource management. The application after the update, does not consume as many CPU resources. That is, if you have worked on a tab in a previous session, now Faviconographer is able to detect this page to assign it the corresponding icon, even if we have not accessed that tab in the current session. The main novelty of the update presented today is the ability to view icons from previous sessions, from tabs that have been reopened in Safari. If you want to give it a more visual look, you can try this complement. Today we received an update of the application to the version 1.1. Therefore, now you can choose the simplicity and minimalism of Apple or the detail of other browsers. One of the applications that are causing curiosity in the Apple community is faviconographer. At I'm from Mac, we recently talked about this Safari plugin, which allows you to add detail to the tabs, known as favicons, in the style of other Chrome-like browsers adding details such as icons, to quickly identify the tabs. A year later astronaut Norman Thagard flew in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft to spend 115 days on Mir and on 29 June 1995, Space Shuttle Atlantis docked to the Russian space station. On 3 February 1994 Russian cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev joined the crew of Space Shuttle Discovery on an eight-day orbital mission. “The idea arose that we could capitalise on this expertise by inviting them into this partnership.” “There was a strong sense this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” says Neal. The economy was in such a desperate state there was a real chance the country’s space programme could fizzle out completely. However, with the final collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991, the Russian space industry was severely lacking in cash. While Freedom was tied up in committees, crews had been living in space station Mir for more than five years. If the space race had been about developing a permanent settlement in space, then Russia would have emerged the winner. “It was done in the usual way with a bunch of contractors and they were over budget – we had spent $8bn and had nothing to show for it.”Īdded to that, the Iron Curtain that had been so important in giving Freedom a political and diplomatic purpose was rapidly coming apart. “As a programme it was in very difficult shape,” says Manber. “Instead of having to design each element, simply took what existed and morphed it into something you could use for a different purpose.” “Skylab was vital for underpinning the resurgence of interest in having a more permanent station,” says David Baker, a former Nasa engineer-turned-author, who worked on the Apollo, Shuttle and space station programmes. Cobbling together a space station programme out of the two was not a giant leap of imagination. The first anyone knew of the tragedy was when ground support staff opened the spacecraft hatch.īack in the USA, with the Moon programme cut short and the Space Shuttle still on the drawing board, Nasa had several enormous Saturn 5 rockets and state of the art Apollo space capsules going spare. Without spacesuits, the crew were killed in seconds. But during re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere a faulty valve opened, sucking the air out of the capsule. On 29 June, the three cosmonauts boarded their Soyuz spacecraft for the return to Earth. The cosmonauts spent three weeks living and working in the 20-metre-long cylinder, setting a new space duration record. Two months later a three-man crew docked and took up residence above the Earth. While the US continued its Apollo Moon missions to dwindling public interest, on 19 April 1971 the Soviets launched Salyut 1 – the world’s first space station. Huddled out of the bitter wind behind a rock in the middle of the Kazakh Steppe, with a phone clutched to my ear, I am attempting to commentate for BBC radio on the launch of the first stage of the ISS. And when you investigate the story of how we ended up with a giant orbiting laboratory, circling the planet every 90 minutes, it is remarkable the ISS was ever built at all. We should not, however, take the apparent success of the ISS for granted or ever imagine space travel to be as easy as it looks. One of the greatest triumphs of the ISS is to make space appear routine, boring even. Since the ISS was first permanently occupied in 2000, Russian, American, Japanese, Canadian and European astronauts have lived and worked together 400 kilometres (250 miles) above the Earth. It may not be Apollo 13, but this is exactly the way the space agencies like it. No, he knew not the hour, as he had thought, nor the method, nor what was to be left of him, if anything. The final letter had been noted as the 29th instant, so he had but five more days. He had held the letter he was induced to write, and then dated it for the Count. In other moments, he found himself slipping into an odd serenity an acceptance of his fate that was, perhaps, dangerous to allow to continue.įor unlike other men, he knew the date, if not the hour, of the day he was to die. He knew it wasn’t safe to loiter, and pulled his thin jacket tighter about himself. Or perhaps he ought to call them what they were battlements of a bygone age. It was a balmy night within the castle, save for when the wind picked up. He was, by turns, pondering what it once had been in bygone days, in accordance with the Count’s speeches. It was the night of June 24th, as Jonathan Harker did his level best to find a way that would lead him out of this accursed place, and from this accursed land. |
